Suburban Images emerges in June 2006 as a shell of what it seeks to become – a depository of photographs that presents an image of the suburb that is honest and, with luck, visually interesting and appealing. As the site develops more fully, it hopes to exhibit the many, often contradictory characteristics of the modern American suburb – the idyllic setting of seemingly safe streets, parks and schools, the older home for suburbanites of the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s, the newer home for individuals and families with more diverse backgrounds than ever before, and the backdrop of constant personal and social struggle. As the American suburbs have aged, some have flourished, some have declined, and, in many cases, the distinctions between “urban” and “suburban” have blurred.
